What is a ‘favour’? Well, it’s another name for a bonbonniere, which is an exquisite little gift in its own right or used to enhance another gift, given by the bride as a thank you to each friend and relative who shares her special day. In Italy they are usually made of lace, net, artificial flowers and ribbons with sugared almonds or chocolate dragees.
The word ‘bonbonniere’ can be traced back many hundreds of years to the early days of European history, when among the wealthy aristocrats they were given to celebrate birthdays, christenings and marriages. In their earliest form bonbonnieres were made of gold, precious stones, crystal or porcelain. Even its contents were of great value as sugar was a costly delicacy prized for its supposed medical properties.
Almonds are given at weddings to wish the couple health, wealth, happiness, longevity and fertility (hence 5 almonds in the center of each bonbonniere) but although bonbonnieres date back nearly one thousand years, it was not until the 13th century that almonds were covered with a layer of sugar to become ‘confetti’.
In recent years in the UK the practice of giving bonbonnieres (or favours) at weddings has truly taken hold as English brides discover the pleasure it gives to have a lasting memento of their wedding. They are also used nowadays at christenings and anniversaries and no longer come just surrounded by lace or net.
Today favours come in many different shapes, sizes and colours. We can make them entirely to your specifications which will ensure that they complement your special day perfectly.
